I worked in Thailand before China teaching many different subjects including Math and PE.
What I learned from teaching in China is that it is more difficult here as culturally China isn't as westernised as other Asian countries and it is harder to control a class of 70+. The class size is detrimental to the students learning but it is necessity it seems. China has a very strict and written test oriented visual of language which may lead to an easily quantitative vision of achievement but it doesn't take into account creativity and that’s where I have to come in and try to encourage it. Students need a more western approach for the future and it is slowly becoming visible in the students.
I have learned most Students aren't used to freedom in the classroom and they don't know what to do. They are used to having much information drilled into them and when someone like myself who worked with students in a more liberal setting and saw a great increase in English acquisition as students felt that I was interesting and learned more because they gained respect. In Chinese High school there was a little of this respect from the students as they were interested in my history and who I am and knew I was trying my best to give them the quality they deserve and give the respect and maturity they deserve. I don't feel the same with middle school the students are immature and don't have any real direction while at the time in England at there age they will be looking to the future.
Teaching from a Book isn't my style it is limiting and dependency limits a teaches ability, I find it would be better to work from a syllabus than some book which lacks any balance. Students deserve a more experimental style and from what the students say they need some entertainment and I find once I get the students caught in with my personality they learn quicker and are more willing to participate.
Living in China isn't easy for me, but that's more because of my personality is someone who likes to be coupled and likes someone to basically control my actions a little as I am easily distracted. Many thanks to them!
