I graduated from a famous University with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Cross Cultural Studies, and a minor in early childhood education. I have been involved with teaching children for almost half my life. I began as a volunteer with a children’s charity in my hometown. We would do a variety of different activities with the kids, from stories, songs, woodworking, knitting, to just playing games and doing silly things. I was also in an organization to do programs for the Native children there. While I am often absent from my hometown, I do still participate in these programs when I am there.
I spent three years in Calgary, Canada doing in-home private child care. I would care for one to seven preschool children each day. When I was with the children I would do a variety of activities with them. We would go to the park, ride bikes, and play, but beyond this I would teach them arts/crafts, as well as some basic music lessons. We would read, write stories together, practice using new words, and work on expanding the child’s knowledge/ability in a fun way.
During 2012-2013 I spent time in the Middle East volunteering to teach teenagers and adults English at a school in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was mostly beginner English, and was an excellent first experience in the world of teaching English overseas. After my time with this organization came to a finish, I decided China would be the next location to explore, experience, and teach.
I am happy to be here in Fengxian County, and am enjoying my position very much. I am teaching grades 3, 4, and 6 at a primary school, and going to work everyday is a joy. I look forward to seeing the smiles on the children’s faces every day, and feel privileged to be a part of their lives.
I believe learning should be fun based. When you are having fun, everyone benefits. The students listen more closely and participate a little extra. Even the students who tend to be unwilling to participate will usually join in the fun. All the fun has a lesson behind it, and the lesson is always useful. Learning is not just about gathering the information, but about being able to interact with it in a useful way. My favourite quote about children learning is:
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” ~ Fred Rogers.
